[Review] Baby Jake got up close and personal with fans at The Parish Room

On Thursday, BabyJake along with Lyla DiPaul and Hans Williams gave fans in New Orleans an intimate performance at the Parish Room.

A small but mighty crowd of about 100 people gathered in The Parish Room at the House of Blues on Thursday night. With no barricade, fans were able to feel a more intimate and personal connection with the three amazing acts as they sang along.

Lyla DiPaul opened the show. The singer-songwriter was accompanied by a four-piece band. During her set, she played a number of original tracks including songs from her debut EP, Sleepness Nights. Although the majority of the crowd was unfamiliar with the original songs, her folk-americana sound captivated the crowd along with her brief storytelling of meanings behinds the tracks. The set ended with a classic cover of Taylor Swift‘s “You Belong With Me.”

Next to take the stage was Vermont native and Tulane University student, Hans Williams. The alt-pop artist drew quite the crowd with his effortless melodies and raw talent. Two of my personal favorites were “Checklist” and “When You’re Down” (which is dropping in a couple of weeks)! Williams was accompanied on stage by a five piece band including a pianist and saxophone player which amplifed the set. He was a crowd favorite as they chanted for an encore as he left the stage. You can see Hans Williams live on November 11th at Tipitinas.

Last but certainly not least, BabyJake rocked the stage. From his unique sound to his electric energy to his eye-catching fashion sense to his dance moves, the Florida native is one to watch. Throughout his hour long funk-filled set, Jake was accompanied on stage by a four-piece band.

The last artist I saw live in The Parish Room was Jack Harlow back in October 2019. The venue allows for intimate moments between artists and their fans – and Jake’s show was no different. Various times throughout the show, Jake made a point to connect with fans. One standout moment was when he invited a concert goer named “Elliot” on stage. Before Elliot left the stage, they shared a brief kiss. Jake also serenaded a few fans in the front row and even kissed one concert goer’s hand!

The genre-bending artist performed his 2019 hit, “Cigarettes on Patios” before ending with a cover of Gloria Gaynor’s “I Will Survive.” Before exiting the stage, Jake told the crowd he would be at the merch table after the show – fans were able to purchase t-shirts and also take pictures with him.

Although this was his last show of 2022, you can catch BabyJake on the road in 2023 with Fitz and The Tantrums! Catch him live in a city near you. His larger-than-life confidence, rock-n-roll energy and funky sound is something you have to experience!
